Visual Design Assignment: Perspective

Assignment 3: Perspective

Middle Room
Desolate City

Game Encounters Assignment: Devoid One-Sheet

Since the game had to be a first person game, I decided that a horror based FPS would be the best option.

Visual Design Assignment: Futuristic Weapon

Assignment 2: Futuristic Weapon

Gun Reference
There are a lot of Sci-fi shooters out there, so when researching weapons I decided to look at weapons that had been manufactured by humans. These weapons still resemble modern day firearms but have been streamlined or bulked up depending on their function. Since this weapon has to be a projectile based gun, I decided to focus less on the projectile but on what modification could be made to a gun and its functions using advanced technology. Weapons could be made with faster reload speed, fire rates or more precise shooting.
Initial Sketches

1.       This weapon is a modelled after a pump action shotgun but is much bulkier and feature 3 massive barrels. The idea is that this weapons front is so heavy that is can't be pulled using the wielders own hands, so instead it uses polarity generators to move it as well as keep the weapon steady and reduce recoil.
2.       This pistol features a universal ammo slot that can siphon ammo from the wielders belt or from anywhere nearby, as detected by the sensors on the bottom.
3.       This rifle features a firing mechanism that is similar to a rail gun, using magnetic force to propel the bullet at high speed. The barrel is also segmented and joined by magnets so it can be bent and twisted to alter the bullets path and be steered via the interface on top of the gun.

Nexus Rifle: Rough Design
This final design, the Nexus Rifle, is designed to look streamlined and simple, so it's easy to carry and easy to use. As such there are more curves and most of the complicated firing mechanisms are both internal and automated.

The gun also features an instantaneous reloading system. The magazines, which are loaded into the compartment in the bottom are made of two separate halves. When the ammo in the magazine starts to run dry, the gun ejects the empty bottom half and uses magnetic fields to reload the next magazine. While this is going on, the top half is being used for ammunition and is fired out of the secondary barrel. Once this ammo is expended, the top half of the magazine is ejected out of the top of the gun and the next magazine is used instead. This means that the gun is automatically reloaded without any interference from the wielder.

Classwork 1: Crustaceans Silhouettes

While in class we had to design 3 different creatures based on Crustaceans using the silhouettes.

(Created in Photoshop)
The first creature is inspired by a crab, but the claws are all arranged upwards rather than being on it's arms.

The second creature is based on a krill but is extended so it more resembles a sea serpent.

The third creature is designed as an ambush predator that would hide under a canopy of barnacles and attack with it's second mouth.

Visual Design Assignment: Tentacle Monster

Assignment 1: Tentacle Monster

During my research, I found plenty of examples of creatures that were based around or included tentacles and realized that these creatures could be broken down into different subgroups.

There are naturally occurring tentacles, the most obvious examples being Octopus and Squid but also including the Kraken or the monsters from the "Mist". There are other examples such as the creatures from the Cthulhu Mythos that posses tentacles but not necessarily where they'd normally be or where they would be useful.

Alternatively there are mutants like the Necromorphs, the Lambant or the Los Plagas. Both of these feature tentacles that feature blades, spikes or other organic weaponry and are clearly designed for slashing and attacking rather than simply gripping things. Because of this, their tentacles lack suckers and are formed from the creatures inner workings or are coated in blood and viscera, giving them a more macabre appearance.

Initial Sketches (Pencil then Scanned)

Out of all the designs, I thought that the Outer Centaur had the best visual appeal to it since the tentacles weren't just located on one part of its body and therefore seemed more natural. The blank face gives it a very alien appearance but it could possibly be improved by removing the nose holes. I also liked the more macabre designs I did such as the Entrail, with its organ tentacles but I don't think the rotten design looked very interesting. The large Octoman that I drew, while I wasn't a fan of how the body came out, the idea of having multiple different appendages on the ends of each tentacles would make the overall design more interesting and bizarrely asymmetrical.

Final Concept (Pencil)

I decided to combine all these elements for the final design creating an Eldritch inspired figure with tentacles made from sinew and viscera emerging from its back. I tried to design the tentacles so that they were clearly made from a different material than the rest of the creature and also incorporated the interlacing parts and membranes to give it some complexity and texture as well as replicate the membrane present in between tentacles in octopus.
